His uncle wanted Richard to read law in Colonel Thompson’s office when they had become settled. He himself was to buy one of the packing houses on the other side of the river. An advertisement that it was for sale had been inserted in a Philadelphia newspaper, and this it was that had interested John Seymour in the little town on the Wabash. Long before his nephew had come from England, his uncle had wanted to leave New York City and Philadelphia and journey to the Northwest Territory, reported by western settlers to be the garden spot of the world.
Most of us were on horseback, but some few were in fine carriages. We sang and cheered to think that a steamboat had come to us from the east. We did not know that it was the last time one was ever to make that long trip. “Of course we could not do enough for the captain and his party. We took them all into town and gave them a fine ball. ” some child would ask. Aunt Catherine would stare. She was very much of an aristocrat.
